THE BIG THINK : The Big Bang Theory in Black & White

The Big Think was included in the notable list of the Children's Book Council of Australia, Children's Book of the Year Awards 2009 (Eve Pownall Award for Information Books).

It is an art / science picture book about the Big Bang theory.

Greg Sugden, who wrote and illustrated The Big Think has a science degree and makes his living as an artist. For the past 18 years he has lived and worked in the historic village of Braidwood, near Canberra, Australia where he has a studio / gallery. He has always had an interest in cosmology and with this project, his aim was to make the Big Bang Theory accessible to a wider audience.

Both teenagers and adults with little scientific literacy will be able to enjoy the experience of watching the story of the universe unfold in 38 black and white drawings without all the jargon and mathematical formulae. By representing gravity, energy and subatomic particles as characters, he presents this complex theory in a way that is both entertaining and easy to follow.

"Whether it be the Dreamtime Stories of Australian aborigines or the Book of Genesis in the bible, creation stories about how the earth and the heavens came to be, are common to all cultures. It seems we all share a deep-rooted need for a story that explains our existence. The creation story accepted by Science is the Big Bang Theory.

While most people have heard of the Big Bang, few are familiar with the details of the story. This book aims to present  this complex theory in a way that can be easily understood. Both children and adults with little scientific literacy can watch the story of the universe unfold through a series of black and white drawings. The titles of the drawings form a simple version of the story while the text gives a more comprehensive explanation of the Big Bang.

I think we are fortunate to be among the first few generations of humans to be able to look up into the night sky and have some rational understanding of what we are looking at. This creation story is an intellectual heritage that should be accessible to everyone."

(Greg Sugden)

"It is a remarkable piece of work and has achieved exactly what you had set out to do. It is accurate in every detail, and seems to lay out the the grand picture of the universe in an effortless manner, in a simple and easily understandable format. The equivalence of mass and energy, the creation of matter, the birth and death of stars, nuclear burning, and the recycling of matter through exploding stars and the formation of new generations of stars by gravitational collapse, are all explained admirably. An expert could not have done any better......Well done on an excellent piece of work."
(Professor D T Wickramasinghe, while Head of the Astrophysical Theory Centre and the Department of Mathematics at the Australian National University)
